| Resumen en inglés | It is customary to relate the interest and admiration of Nietzsche by the opera “Carmen” only with the composer George Bizet. In this article, I seek to show the importance of Prosper Mérimée, the author of the book that gave origin to the opera, to the reflection of Nietzsche on the passions, especially about love. The reading of Mérimée can also be very instructive to understand some of the reasons that led Nietzsche to a separation with Wagner, as, for instance, the treatment given to the theme of the passions, in connection with Stendhal. Even without having read “Carmen” – he just watched the opera and knew very well the score – Nietzsche certainly was able to rediscover in the work of Bizet echoes of his admiration for the writer Mérimée |
| Resumen en portugués | Costuma-se relacionar o interesse e a admiração de Nietzsche pela ópera “Carmem”, exclusivamente ao compositor George Bizet. Neste artigo, procuro mostrar a importância de Prosper Mérimée, o autor do livro que deu origem à ópera, para a reflexão de Nietzsche sobre as paixões, em especial sobre o amor. A leitura de Mérimée pode também ser bastante instrutiva para entendermos alguns dos motivos que levaram Nietzsche a se separar de Wagner, como, por exemplo, o tratamento dado ao tema das paixões, em conexão com Stendhal. Mesmo sem ter lido “Carmem” – ele apenas assistiu à ópera e conhecia muito bem a partitura – Nietzsche pode certamente reencontrar na obra de Bizet os ecos de sua admiração pelo escritor Mérimée |
