| Resumen en español | Durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, la instalación de bases en la Antártica era una proeza debido a la falta de implementos tecnológicos y las complejidades climáticas. En 1948, y tras la primera expedición realizada un año antes, se fundó la Base Bernardo O’Higgins por parte del Ejército de Chile. Desde ahí en adelante, sus labores se han centrado en el apoyo de la soberanía por medio de la ciencia, diplomacia y la instalación de civiles cercanos en sus alrededores. Por medio del presente artículo se pretende analizar las implicancias de la instalación de aquella base antártica y el aporte que esta ha constituido para la soberanía y ciencia nacional |
| Resumen en inglés | During the first half of the 20th century, the installation of bases in the Antarctic was a feat due to the lack of technological implements and climatic complexities. In 1948, just a year after the first expedition was carried out, the Bernardo O’Higgins Base was inaugurated by the Chilean Army. From then on, its tasks and activities have been focused on the support of the sovereignty through science, diplomacy and the installation of civilian outposts in the surrounding area. In the present article, we intend to analyze the implications of the installation of that Antarctic base and the contribution it has made to the national sovereignty and the scientific research activities |
