| Resumen en español | El yacimiento arqueológico que alberga las ruinas del primer núcleo urbano de la ciudad de Panamá, ocupado entre el 1519 y el 1671, se ha visto afectado desde el momento en que fuera abandonado en el Siglo XVII hasta nuestros días por una larga serie de eventos tanto naturales como antrópicos, los cuales le han dado las características actualmente visibles. Dificultad para la lectura visual de la unidad urbana, sensación de ilegibilidad integral; ausencia o pérdida de ajuar arqueológico edificado; falta de integración en la lectura de la secuencia histórica de ocupación del sitio desde tiempos prehispánicos; disección del yacimiento a causa de la construcción de un corredor de tránsito vehicular dentro de sus predios; son algunos de los elementos que conllevan a que el Proyecto Arqueológico Panamá Viejo (PAPV) -adelantado por el Patronato Panamá Viejo desde 1996- enfrente retos siempre cambiantes en lo que respecta al abordaje de un plan integral de investigación en el sitio. Con la eliminación del entramado vehicular asociado a la modificación de la red vial terminada en 2013, el Departamento de Arqueología enfrenta nuevos retos bajo un enfoque actualizado tanto del Proyecto como de las metas a mediano y largo plazo. Ante esta nueva realidad se han actualizado algunas líneas de investigación vigentes entre 1996 y 2010 y se han definido algunas nuevas líneas adaptadas a los avances en el estado del arte y la nueva situación del yacimiento |
| Resumen en inglés | The Panama Viejo archaeological site refers to the ruins of the first settlement of the city of Panama, founded by the Spaniards in 1519 over a big indigenous living area and destroyed by Henry Morgan in 1671. Since the seventeenth century to the present day, a long series of events both natural and anthropogenic happened, which have given the currently visible features. A short list of the problems faced today includes impossibility to perceive the ancient urban unit; loss of archaeological built trousseau; lack of integration in the historical sequence of occupation since pre-Hispanic times until 1671; and the dissection of the site because of the presence of a traffic corridor within its limits since 1950; removed between 2011-2013. With the elimination of the main problem -the vehicular network- between 2012 and 2013, the Archaeology department faces new project challenges that means the basis and both as medium and long-term approach. Given this new reality have updated some existing lines of research between 1996 and 2010 and have defined some new lines adapted to the state of the discipline in the country and the new situation of the site. During 15 years, the Panama Viejo Archaeological Project (PAPV) -developed by Patronato Panama Viejo since 1996- focused in the characterization of the archaeological context and increase the available knowledge about the most important ruins. Additionally, during 2002 AECI and Patronato developed a project to rescue the urban trace of the colonial city, the results helped to perform activities to rescue the basis of the integral city view. Today, the archaeological project has a new challenge: going from the partially integrated view to an urban perspective, beginning with redesigning the objectives and rethinking the main investigative lines |
