| Resumen en español | Actualmente, las diferentes técnicas de la geofísica se han constituido en valiosas herramientas no destructivas para la investigación arqueológica. En este artículo, se discuten brevemente algunas de las que se emplearon en Panamá Viejo durante el 2006, dentro del marco de un proyecto multidisciplinario, coordinado y dirigido por la Universidad de Tübingen. En dicha investigación se logró recolectar datos geofísicos en áreas de la ciudad colonial, que no poseen ruinas visibles. El presente aporte retoma únicamente los resultados obtenidos en las inmediaciones de los conventos de La Merced y San Francisco, donde las técnicas geofísicas se combinaron con la investigación arqueológica, para determinar si es posible observar rasgos subsuperficiales que remitan a antiguas construcciones de madera. El resultado reveló que en espacios sin ruinas visibles, los datos arrojados por la investigación geofísica ayudan a deteminar las áreas que poseen un alto potencial arqueológico, y además, que contrastar los datos obtenidos con excavaciones arqueológicas (incluso a pequeña escala), permite la interpretación de las estructuras encontradas, generando una profunda comprensión del lugar |
| Resumen en inglés | As a very strong instrument for pre-excavation investigation, geophysical surveys continue to become more important in archaeology. In this paper, the various geophysical survey methods and their fields of application will be discussed, focusing in the geoelectrical survey, which examines soil resistivity. This method was applied in a large-scale survey within an interdisciplinary field campaign organized and conducted by the University of Tübingen in 2006. The investigations using various survey methods covered the whole area of the former colonial town of Panamá Viejo with a focus on the areas where no visible ruins reveal the existence of previous masonry constructions. The results of the geoelectrical survey are presented for a selected area where they can be combined with archaeological information referring to the newly discovered structures: the area around the convents of La Merced and San Francisco. The survey was conducted in this area to determine if it is possible to observe sub-surface features associated with wood-built structures using geophysical means. The surveys with the EM38 revealed sufficient linear structures that are discussed in this contribution. Some of the anomalies derive from modern disturbances that are still visible on the surface. Others can be considered as originating from collapsing parts of the still standing ruins. The remaining anomalies can only be interpreted referring to former function and chronological setting after excavation. The alignment of the anomalies was used as a criterium for locating trial trenches. Four linear anomalies aligned with the colonial town grid were investigated archaeologically.
