| Resumen en español | El objetivo general de la investigación es demostrar que el edificio que alberga al Museo Afroantillano de Panamá cumple con los valores que exige la ley panameña para ser declarado monumento histórico nacional. Los objetivos específicos son, contextualizar al edificio bajo estudio en la evolución urbana y social de Ciudad de Panamá, y realzar la influencia de lo afroantillano en la cultura panameña mediante un edificio referente elevado a la categoría de monumento histórico nacional. El enfoque técnico de la investigación consistió en examinar la importancia del edificio del museo como testimonio del pasado de la nación panameña -específicamente la contribución afroantillana a ese pasado-, mediante la investigación y aná- lisis de los acontecimientos históricos, legales, sociales y culturales de su entorno, considerando que la construcción de la estación 5 de Mayo del metro de Panamá y la consolidación del sistema de transporte Metro Bus, transformarán nuevamente el entorno inmediato del edificio. La metodología aplicada consistió en investigar las influencias históricas, culturales y sociales en torno a la antigua capilla de la Misión Cristiana en el barrio de El Marañón, desde su origen en 1910, su transformación en el Museo Afroantillano de Panamá en 1980, y su situación actual, para luego proceder al análisis de la información investigada. Ésta incluyó recopilación documental y trabajo de campo concernientes a la historia y aportes de los afroantillanos en Panamá. Se consideraron lineamientos internacionales sobre la conservación de estructuras históricas. El resultado principal y aporte de esta investigación ha sido demostrar que el edificio posee las cualidades necesarias para ser elevado a la categoría de monumento histórico nacional. |
| Resumen en inglés | The general aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the building of the West Indian Museum of Panama meets the requirements set by Panamanian law to be declared a national historic monument. The specific objectives of this paper are, to contextualize the building under study into the urban and social development of Panama City, and to enhance the influence of the West Indies culture on Panamanian culture, by means of a reference building elevated to the category of a national historic monument. The technical approach of this research was to examine the importance of the building of the West Indies Museum of Panama as a testimony of the history of Panama, focusing on the West Indies contribution to that history, through research and analysis of historical, legal, social and cultural events that took place in its surroundings. The latter becomes more relevant considering that the construction of the metropolitan subway station 5th of May of the metro de Panamá and the implementation of the Metro Bus transport system will transform once more the immediate environment of the building. The methodology incorporated the investigation of the cultural, social and historic influences around the former chapel of the Christian Mission in the neighborhood of El Marañón since its founding in 1910, its conversion into the West Indian Museum of Panama in 1980, and its current situation, to then proceed to the analysis of the researched data. This included documentary and field research on the history and contributions of the West Indies in Panama. International guidelines on the conservation of historic structures were considered. The main conclusion and contribution of this research has been to demonstrate that the building meets the required attributes to be elevated to the status a national historic monument |
