| Resumen en español | El primer centenario de la independencia de Venezuela, celebrado el 19 de abril de 1910, fue motivo de múltiples actividades programadas para su conmemoración, aunque las acciones más importantes fueron aquellas decretadas por el gobierno nacional especialmente para la ocasión. Particularmente dos de ellas, la construcción del edificio para la Oficina Principal de Registro Principal y Archivo Nacional –actual Archivo General de la Nación– y la celebración del Congreso de Municipalidades, giraron en torno a dos visiones distintas de la misma celebración: una, la que se une al pasado, a la historia que debemos olvidar porque significa refrescar las heridas del período colonial; y otra, la que se aleja de ese atormentado pasado y de su carga histórica, y se enfoca hacia un futuro promisorio que permitiría reescribir la nación. Son dos aristas opuestas de la conmemoración que, al ser estudiadas en conjunto y en el contexto histórico, ofrecen una imagen de los derroteros en los que se construía la idea de nación a principios del siglo xx |
| Resumen en inglés | On April 19, 1910, multiple activities and projects were programmed to commemorate the first centenary of the independence of Venezuela. Two of them, the construction of the building for the Office of the Main Registry –currently the General Archive of the Nation– and the celebration of the Congress of Municipalities, showcase mixed visions of the idea of nation that was conveyed by the government: a) the one that unites the nation to its past, which we should forget to avoid refreshing the wounds of the colonial period, and b) the one that moves away from that tormented past and its historical load, and focuses on a promissory future that would allow to rewrite the nation. These two events –the archive and the Congress of Municipalities– presented altogether, offer an image of the courses in which the idea of nation was being constructed at the beginning of the Venezuelan 20th century |
