| Resumen en español | El viaje puede representar diferentes tipos de búsqueda: la búsqueda de riqueza, de felicidad, de la inmortalidad, o sencillamente, de una vida mejor. Las tres protagonistas de la novela viajan entre Senegal, su país natal, y Francia; además cada una hace un viaje introspectivo, buscando su propia personalidad. Al principio, las tres mujeres fuertes no parecen tan fuertes, pero el lector descubre en cada una la dignidad femenina, y la confianza en sí. Norah, abogada, madre soltera en París, deja a su niña con su compañero cuando su padre, todavía tiránico, le manda regresar a Senegal para ayudar a su hermano, acusado de la muerte de su madrastra. Fanta, mujer intelectual, profesora en su pueblo natal, ahora es pesimista, triste, silenciosa, obligada a ser madre y ama de casa porque su marido, Rudy, no le había advertido que ella no podría enseñar en Francia. Fanta es casi invisible ahora, y su parte en la novela es contada por Rudy. Khady Demba, la tercera mujer, fue feliz durante tres años con un esposo simpático, pacífico y paciente aunque ella temía ser infértil. Cuando él muere, ella se encuentra sin hogar, trabajo ni dinero, y tiene que regresar a Senegal. A pesar de las humillaciones que soporta en Senegal, ella guarda sobre todo su dignidad y optimismo. Estas tres mujeres tan diferentes están unidas por la dignidad que mantienen durante sus viajes físicos, y durante sus viajes introspectivos en la búsqueda de su propia personalidad |
| Resumen en inglés | The word journey can infer different types of searches: The search for wealth, happiness, immortality, or simply a better life. The three main characters of this novel travel between Senegal, their native country, and France; furthermore, each makes an introspective journey, seeking her own personality. At first, the three strong women do not seem strong, but the reader discovers in each both dignity and self- confidence. Norah, a lawyer, a single mother in Paris, leaves her child with her partner when her father, still tyrannical, tells her return to Senegal to help her brother, accused of the death of his stepmother. Fanta, an intellectual woman, and teacher in her former African hometown, now is pessimistic, sad, silent, forced to be a mother and homemaker for her husband, Rudy, who had not warned her that she could not teach in France. Fanta is almost invisible now, and her part of the novel is narrated by Rudy. Khady Demba, the third wife, was happy during her three years with a friendly, peaceful and patient husband, although she feared being sterile. When he dies, she is left homeless, unemployed and penniless, and has to return to Senegal. Despite the humiliations she experiences back in Senegal, she manages to maintain her dignity and optimism. These quite different women are linked by the way they maintain their dignity during their physical and introspective journeys in search of their own personality |
