| Resumen en inglés | This article is a theoretical investigation about the notion of an operant response strength, used by B. F. Skinner when he treats the behavior as an object of scientifi c study. According to the referred author, the notion of strength of a response represents the probability of occurrence of an operant response and consists in a fundamental datum to the behavioral analysis. The descriptions of the operant’s strength and the variables that determine it represent an essential task, under the responsibility of the behavioral analyst. Even so, it is not possible to directly observe the strength of a response, but it is possible to indirectly infer it from observable behavioral events. The strength of the response indicates the possibility of a specifi c response to occur, among other possible responses available in the same behavioral repertoire. The description of the force is made through an analysis procedure that consists in the identifi cation of a particular form of response and the corresponding relations of probability with its independent variables. Skinner named these probability relations as functional units, which can be also understood as a representation of the kind of functional relation that is established between a class of discriminative stimuli and a class of operant responses. The functional unit is the behavior itself, put under investigation in order to fi nd out its determinant variables, which are capable of modify its strength. The emotional and motivational operations and the reinforcing stimuli defi ne, in addition to the class of discriminative stimuli, the strength of the operant response too. | Resumen en portugués | Este artigo é uma investigação teórica da noção de força da resposta operante, tal como empregada por B. F. Skinner na sua concepção do comportamento como objeto de estudo científi co. Segundo o referido autor, a noção de força da resposta, ao representar a probabilidade de ocorrência da resposta operante, desempenha o papel de dado fundamental da análise do comportamento. Nesse sentido, constitui tarefa imprescindível do analista do comportamento a descrição da força operante e das variáveis que a determinam. Apesar disso, a força não é diretamente observável, mas somente inferida indiretamente de eventos comportamentais observáveis. A força mostra a possibilidade de uma resposta específi ca ocorrer, dentre tantas outras respostas disponíveis em um mesmo repertório comportamental. A descrição da força se dá por meio de um procedimento de análise que consiste na identifi cação de uma determinada forma de resposta e das correspondentes relações de probabilidade que mantém com as suas variáveis independentes. Tais relações de probabilidade são denominadas por Skinner de unidades funcionais e podem, ainda, ser entendidas como representando o tipo de relação funcional que se estabelece entre uma classe de estímulos discriminativos e uma classe de respostas operantes. A unidade funcional é o próprio comportamento que se dispõe a uma investigação das variáveis que o determinam modifi cando a sua força. Além da classe de estímulos discriminativos, defi nem também a força da resposta operante as operações emocionais e motivacionais e os estímulos reforçadores.
