| Spanish abstract | El hábito de onicofagia es cada vez más frecuente en la población, lo cual afecta la dirección de crecimiento facial. Este trabajo muestra el crecimiento facial con este hábito, utilizando el análisis de Björk-Jarabak, los datos fueron analizados en el paquete estadístico SPSS V. 11.5 con la prueba ji-cuadrada (x2) de una ruta con un nivel de significancia de .05. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el crecimiento facial para estos pacientes en sentido vertical fue neutra, y en dirección sagital presentaron una retrusión mandibular, lo cual puede afectar tanto la función como la estética del sistema estomatognático. Este hábito aumenta con la edad y se le debe dar un mayor espacio en la elaboración de la historia clínica registrando no únicamente si está presente o no, sino también la frecuencia, la duración, desde cuando se inició, la posición de la mano, con la finalidad de identificar elementos que puedan influir en la dirección de crecimiento |
| English abstract | Onycophagia, an ever more frequent habit, affects the direction of facial growth. This paper shows the relationship between the nail biting habit and facial growth direction using Björk-Jarabak’s cephalometric analysis. Data were processed with the SPSS V. 11.5 statistics pack with a one-way chi square test (x2 ) and a 0.05 level of significance. The results show that the vertical facial growth direction in the subjects of the study was neutral while in the sagittal direction they show a receding lower jaw which may affect both the function and the aesthetic of the stomatognathic system. Onycophagia increases with age and it should receive more attention in medical records by registering not only whether it is present or not but also its frequency, duration, the age of onset and the position of the hand in order to identify the factors affecting the direction of facial growth |
