| Spanish abstract | Al finalizar la época colonial, en el virreinato novohispano subsistía la costumbre de asociar los desastres originados por fenómenos naturales a castigos que el Todopoderoso creía justos por los pecados de los hombres. Sin embargo, había también una tendencia por dotar de otro tipo de explicación a dichos eventos; las inundaciones en la ciudad de Guanajuato son una muestra de ello. Ocurridas en una ciudad acostumbrada a sufrir estas catástrofes de manera periódica, no había razón para atribuirlas a enojos divinos, las causas de ellas saltaban a la vista, el verdadero reto consistía en definir los medios precisos para evitarlas. La inundación del 5 de julio de 1760 marca el inicio de este proceso: la implantación de ciertas medidas como encajonar el cauce del río y procurar la elevación de los desniveles en las construcciones, marcan el inicio de una importante transformación en la geografía original de la ciudad |
| English abstract | At the end of the colonial epoch, in the viceroyalty of New Spain there was the custom of associating natural disasters with punishments that God thought just for mankind’s sins. However, there was also a tendency to give another type of explication for these events, and that given for the floods in the city of Guanajuato are a demonstration of this. The city was accustomed to suffering these catastrophes periodically, and therefore there was no reason to attribute them to divine displeasure and the causes were obvious. The true challenge was to define the precise means to avoid them. With the flood of July 5, 1760 began this process with the implementation of certain methods such as diverting the river and elevating and leveling the constructions nearby. This marked the beginning of an important transformation in the original geography of the city |
