| Spanish abstract | Se discute la emergencia de la pluricelularidad y de los epitelios en relación a la aparición de las uniones celulares, con la finalidad de ilustrar los primeros pasos de la evolución animal. Para esto, se analizan la estructura y roles de las uniones celulares de tipo adherente y oclusiva, por considerarlas las más antiguas. Asimismo se abordan algunos aspectos de las principales proteínas que las constituyen, las cadherinas y las claudinas, así como las estructuras relacionadas encontradas en esponjas y coanoflagelados, los animales más antiguos y los ancestros de estos, respectivamente. Se concluye que en el antepasado de los animales probablemente se hallaba algún tipo de unión adherente y quizás, oclusiva, pareciendo la primera como de mayor importancia para dicha emergencia, y que luego fueron haciéndose más complejas hasta adquirir el grado de especialización actualmente observado |
| English abstract | The emergence of multicellularity and epithelia in relation to the appearance of cellular junctions, in order to illustrate the first steps of animal evolution, is discussed. We analyzed the structure and roles of adherens and occludins, considered to be the oldest. Also treated are some aspects of the main proteins that constitute them, the cadherins and claudins, as well as the related structures observed in sponges and choanoflagellates, the most ancient animals and the ancestors of these, respectively. It was concluded that the animal ancestor probably possessed some kind of adherens and possibly occludins, appearing as the first of major importance. These junctions increased in complexity through until the complexity observed in modern times |
