| English abstract | On the basic of an ethnographic and linguistic study of maternal mortality in Bolivia, this ethno-obstetric research deals with conception, gestation and childbirth in a Quechua-speaking community near Potosi. It analyzes the parallelism established between the early formation of the person and de mytho-historical origins of society. Prehispanic pagan substance flows constantly into a society o “converts”, thereby giving reality to the juridical concept of the “originary Indian”. The article aims to transcend the opposition between “essentialist” and “hybridist” interpretations of Indian society by showing that the originario is necessarily constructed by Indians commoners as “essential” without therefore denying his/her constant historical transformation. The rites of separation of the “aggressive foetus” from de mother also pose questions to psychoanalysts concerning the influence that perinatal experiences can have on the formation on the individual person in different historical and cultural contexts |
| Portuguese abstract | Partindo de um estudo etnográfico e linguístico sobre a mortalidade materna na Bolívia, este trabalho etno-obstétrico trata da concepção, da gestação e do parto em uma comunidade falante de quéchua, em Potosí. Analisa o paralelismo estabelecido entre a formação recente da pessoa e as origens mito-históricas da sociedade. A substância pagã pré-hispânica flui constantemente para uma sociedade de conversos, dando realidade ao conceito jurídico do “índio originário”. Propõe-se superar a oposição entre as interpretações “essencialistas” e “hibridistas” da sociedade indígena, ao mostrar que o “originário” necessariamente se constroi pelos aldeões como “essencial”, porém, sem por isso negar sua constante transformação histórica.
