English abstract | The significant participation of the indigenous population in the rebellion of Canudos – one of the best known events in Brazilian history – is almost completely ignored by historiographers. This article aims to review the written and oral documents which refer to indigenous presence in Antonio Conselheiro’s village, and suggests insights for a more detailed understanding of the symbolic reasons and specifically indigenous projects involved in that rebellion. In this sense, it intends to accomplish two different goals: make a contribution to the indigenous history of the semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil, as well as elucidating the events that occurred in Canudos |
