English abstract | The Corumbá Project builds a continuous history of the indigenous populations which occupied the Pantanal in the prehistoric, colonial and imperial periods up to the advent of the Republic. In a space of 5,000 k2, around the city of Corumbá, archeological research is studying the establishment of canoe using populations, who lived from fishing and gathering in the swamp areas and the settling of horticulturalists who established themselves on the land not affected by the annual floods of the River Paraguai. The first occupation of the Pantanal took place more than 8,000 years ago; actual settling there became dense within the last 4,400 years and ceramics appeared 2,200 years afterwards, a little before the beginning of the Christian era. At the time of the European colonization, populations of different linguistic origins lived in the area |
