| English abstract | This article reflects about the governmental efforts to promote audiences for the theater production in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Focusing on the professional theater production, and with a special attention to the group theater segment, this text is concerned about the need to expand the non-specialized audience interested in watching theatrical perfor-mances, aiming at the artistical and financial sustainability of this artistic language. Throughout the article, there is an analysis of projects that seek to approximate theater and spectators, some of them in activity and others already extinct, observing the distinction between "doing theater" and "seeing theater", and the permanence of the problem that theater is not seen as a desired activity for citizen’s free time |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo reflete sobre os esforços governamentais na formação de plateia para o teatro na cidade de São Paulo. Com foco na produção de teatro profissional, e com especial atenção ao segmento de teatro de grupo, o texto assume uma preocupação com a necessidade de ampliar o público não especializado interessado em assistir a espetáculos teatrais, visando à sustentabilidade artística e financeira desta linguagem artística. No decorrer do artigo, são analisados projetos, atuais e já extintos, voltados à aproximação entre público e teatro, observando a distinção entre o "fazer teatro" e o "ver teatro", e a permanência do problema que é o teatro não se configurar como uma atividade desejada para o tempo livre do cidadão |
