| Spanish abstract | Este artículo presenta una revisión histórica de la relación birregional Unión Europea-América Latina y el Caribe. Identifica sus principales motores, así como los factores que han llevado al alejamiento paulatino de ambas regiones, lo que quedó de manifiesto al posponerse la cumbre UE-Celac prevista para 2017. Se argumenta que algunos de los supuestos fundamentales sobre los cuales se construyó esta relación ya no se sostienen del todo: el consenso liberal se ha diluido, mientras que la promesa de integración regional latinoamericana no ha terminado de materializarse como la UE esperaba |
| English abstract | The text presents a historical review of the bi-regional relationship between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean. It identifies its main drivers as well as the factors behind the recent drifting away of both regions, manifest in the post-position of the EU-CELAC summit, planned for 2017. It argues that some of the fundamental assumptions over which the relationship was built no longer hold entirely: the liberal consensus has diluted, while the promise of Latin American regional integration never materialized as the EU expected |
