| Spanish abstract | Este artículo busca analizar la relación entre Estado y estadística y comprender los cambios en el uso de los datos estadísticos, tanto por la autoridad constituida como por la sociedad en general, a lo largo de la historia. Si inicialmente la estadística se utilizaba como instrumento de control de los gobiernos sobre la población, con el paso del tiempo se ha transformado en una herramienta de participación ciudadana, que ha ayudado a garantizar el buen funcionamiento de las sociedades democráticas. Para este cambio, el accionar de los institutos oficiales de estadística ha contribuido decisivamente, los cuales asumieron el papel legítimo de gran proveedor mundial de información estadística fiable, relevante y útil |
| English abstract | This work seeks to analyze the relationship between the state and statistics and understand the changes in the use of statistical data by the constituted authority and by society throughout history. In the past, statistics were used as an instrument of government control over the population, but over time they have become a tool for citizen participation, helping to ensure the proper functioning of democratic societies. Official statistical institutes took on a decisive role for this change. Today, the international statistical system is legitimized as the major global provider of reliable, relevant and useful statistical information |
