| Spanish abstract | Los edificios bibliotecarios históricamente han sido destinados a la consulta y preservación de las colecciones bibliográficas, el artículo describe el proceso de cambio sufrido por estas edificaciones a través de la historia, derivado, a su vez, de las transformaciones en el rol de las bibliotecas: de albergues de documentos a instituciones que son hoy espacios de sociabilidad y referentes culturales, que almacenan grandes cantidades de información, prestan servicios a públicos cada vez más amplios y que demanda de ellos un papel dinámico en la sociedad |
| English abstract | Historically, library buildings have been destined for the inquiry and preservation of bibliographical collections. This paper describes the process of change experimented by these buildings throughout history, which has derived, at the same time, from the transformations in the role of libraries; that is, from the repositories of documents to institutions that are currently cultural references and spaces to socialize. They store great quantity of information, provide services to an ever increasing public, which demands from them a dynamic role in the society |
