| English abstract | This paper presents a contrast from the suggestion of J. G. A. Pocock between the myth of Venice and the Turkey in modern republicans authors. Restricting the object to thinkers who fall into the tradition “Florentine-Atlantic republic tradition”, generally more wont to the dictates of history than of natural law, the text argues that these authors, in a more or less voluntary, eventually by disseminating and/or deepen the striking distinction between East and West. We conclude that, even addicted to historic knowledge, the thinkers do not accept fair comparisons between Western and Eastern models, and references to Venice and Turkey contribute incisively on this understanding |
| Portuguese abstract | O presente artigo visa apresentar a contraposição, a partir da sugestão de J. G. A. Pocock, entre o mito de Veneza e a Turquia nos autores republicanos modernos. Restringindo o objeto de estudo aos pensadores que se inserem na tradição “florentino-atlântica republicana”, de modo geral, mais afeitos aos ditames da história do que ao direito natural, o texto argumenta que tais autores, de modo mais ou menos voluntário, acabaram por disseminar e/ou aprofundar a marcante distinção entre Ocidente e Oriente. Conclui-se que, mesmo identificados com o conhecimento histórico e seus exemplos, os pensadores não aceitam comparações equitativas entre modelos ocidentais e orientais, e as referências a Veneza e Turquia contribuem incisivamente nesse entendimento |
