| English abstract | This article examines how François Guizot (1787 – 1874) and Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 – 1859) articulated their own conceptions about the political legacy of the French Revolution. I propose that their interpretations of that major political event can be better understood if we establish three levels of analysis: 1) the assumptions about philosophy of history underlying each author’s interpretation (the concept of civilization in Guizot’s work and the concept of democratic revolution in Tocqueville’s work); 2) the role of the French Revolution in the particular history of France (seen as positive by Guizot and as negative by Tocqueville); 3) the reception of the so-called “principles of 1789”, especially the principle of the sovereignty of the people (refuted by Guizot and reshaped by Tocqueville) |
| Portuguese abstract | Este artigo compara o modo como dois autores e personagens políticos da França do século XIX — François Guizot (1787 – 1874) e Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 – 1859) — lidaram com o legado político da Revolução Francesa. Explora-se o contraste entre as duas interpretações da Revolução Francesa, por meio de três níveis: 1) os pressupostos de filosofia da História subjacentes à interpretação de cada autor (o conceito de civilização, na obra de Guizot, e o de revolução democrática, na de Tocqueville); 2) o papel da Revolução Francesa, na História particular da França (visto como positivo por Guizot e como negativo por Tocqueville); 3) a recepção aos chamados “princípios de 1789”, com destaque para o princípio da soberania do povo (refutado por Guizot e reformulado por Tocqueville) |
