Spanish abstract En el ineludible acto de recorte que realiza el fotógrafo al disparar el obturador, apuesta su ética profesional y su pericia para hallar el detalle que exprese la totalidad en lo que parecería un juego de fractales o de semejanzas a diversas escalas. En estos términos, se analiza la fotografía documental como estrategia de construcción de imágenes con diversos grados de iconicidad e indicialidad desde la semiótica de Peirce. Su destreza consiste en expresar con elocuencia el todo por la parte (o lo que en retórica se entiende como “metonimia” o sinécdoque”) al mismo tiempo que un lenguaje metafórico que opera por semejanzas
English abstract In the inescapable act of cutting off that photographers perform when shooting the camera, they bet their professional ethics and skill in finding the precise detail that better expresses the totality of an event or situation. In these terms, one analyzes documentary photography as an image construction strategy with diverse degrees of iconicity and indexicality according to Peirce’s semiotics. Their skill consists of eloquently expressing the whole by the part (or what in rhetoric is defined as metonymy) at the same time that of using metaphorical language operating by similarities. Reality for the photographer would somehow seem a game of fractals or similarities at diverse scales
