| Spanish abstract | La investigación: “Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo (HUM) 40 años de historia”, agrupó, en el año 2000, a un equipo interdisciplinario que integró diferentes experiencias. Los médicos aportaron su vivencia de la dinámica de los avances científicos y tecnológicos en la prestación de salud. Los arquitectos, su visión conceptual del edificio como hecho arquitectónico, en su dialéctica cotidiana con la sociedad, que cambia y se transforma en el tiempo. Los resultados revelaron que el HUM ha constituido un hito en la historia de la ciudad y sus implicaciones sociales van más allá de la construcción de un monumental edificio, emblema de la arquitectura moderna en Maracaibo; así como de los logros médico-científicos que le otorgaron a la ciudad el galardón de “capital científica de Venezuela”. De esta investigación –donde se utilizó el método histórico– señalamos la importancia del uso del testimonio oral como instrumento para reconstruir la historia. El artículo enfoca el edificio como emblema de la época y el significado que ha tenido para la arquitectura regional; su análisis desde el punto de vista moderno; así como las implicaciones sociales que tuvo la institución en un momento clave para la historia venezolana |
| English abstract | The study, “University Hospital of Maracaibo (UHM): 40 Years of History,” brought together an interdisciplinary team that contributed different experiences in the year 2000. Physicians provided their experiences of the dynamic of scientific and technological advances in health services. Architects rendered their conceptual vision of the building as an architectural fact in its daily dialog with society, which changes and transforms itself over time. Findings revealed that the UHM has been a milestone in the city’s history, and its social implications go beyond the construction of a monumental building, emblem of modern architecture in Maracaibo, as well as the medical-scientific accomplishments that bestowed the award of “scientific capital of Venezuela” on the city. The article portrays the building as an emblem of the era and the meaning it has had for regional architecture, its analysis from a modern viewpoint, as well as the social implications the institution had at a key moment in Venezuelan history |
