| Spanish abstract | Este artículo analiza la reacción de las fuerzas dominantes de América Latina ante el avance que tuvieron a fines del siglo pasado y principios del actual los movimientos sociales y las organizaciones de izquierda, que incluso conquistaron el poder político en varios países, estableciendo gobiernos progresistas. La realidad social en la región experimentaba cambios signifi-cativos. Estos acontecimientos sin embargo no podían reiterarse y consolidarse sin provocar una respuesta de las corporaciones transnacionales y las oligarquías locales, ligadas a las derechas, cuyos intereses se veían seriamente afectados. | English abstract | This article analyzes the reaction of the dominant forces of Latin America to the advance of the social movements and leftist organizations at the end of the last century and the beginning of the present, which even conquered political power in several countries, establishing progressive governments. The social reality in the region underwent significant changes. These events, however, could not be reiterated and consolidated without provoking a response from transnational corporations and local right-wing oligarchies whose interests were seriously affected.
