| English abstract | Although the institutionalism in the social sciences has acquired evidence in recent decades, in Brazil, the papers that are devoted to its founding moment are still scarce. In economics, Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) was primarily responsible for opening this type of approach, favoring the use of ancillary themes in the interpretation of social dynamics. Many of these issues were brought forward with the contribution of the most distinct areas of knowledge such as anthropology, history or sociology, in opposition to the rules of the neoclassical economics of the period. Thus, we aimed to regain some of the most important arguments of the classical institutionalism exposed by Veblen, through the notions of instinct, leisure class and technology, while seeking to valorize its role in the guidance of the institutional methodological practices and contribute to the history of social thought |
| Portuguese abstract | Embora o institucionalismo nas ciências sociais tenha adquirido evidência nas últimas décadas, são ainda escassos, no Brasil, os trabalhos que se dedicam ao seu momento fundador. Na economia, foi Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) o principal responsável por inaugurar esse tipo de abordagem, privilegiando o uso de temas auxiliares na interpretação da dinâmica social. Muitos desses temas foram levados adiante com a contribuição das mais distintas áreas do conhecimento, como a antropologia, a história ou a sociologia, em franca oposição às regras da economia neoclássica do período. Assim, objetivamos retomar alguns dos argumentos mais importantes do institucionalismo clássico exposto por Veblen, passando pelas noções de instinto, classe ociosa e tecnologia, procurando simultaneamente valorizar o seu papel na orientação das práticas metodológicas institucionais e contribuir para a história do pensamento social |
