| English abstract | The papaya tree (Carica papaya L.) is a plant of difficult use in the vegetative propagation because the species presents strong apical dominance and low production of lateral shoots. This work was accomplished in the commercial area of the farm AGRICULTURAL CALIMAN S/A, at Linhares - ES, and aimed to study the effect of the pruning in different heights of the trunk in plants of papaya tree ‘Golden’, with two and a half years of age, at the of the productive period. The treatments consisted of five pruning heights (complete without the apex, 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 m) starting from the ground, with the experimental plots consisting of five plants. The appraised characteristics were: shoots number to the 25 days and the 50 days after the pruning; length of the sprouts longer than 5 cm at 50 days after the pruning; and distribution of the shoots in the height of the trunk to the 50 days. The pruning of the stem at 2.0 m of height provided the best results in all of the appraised characteristics |
| Portuguese abstract | O mamoeiro (Carica papaya L.) é uma planta de difícil aproveitamento na propagação vegetativa devido à espécie apresentar forte dominância apical, levando à baixa produção de brotações laterais. Com a poda, é possível suprimir a produção de auxina, responsável pela dominância apical, e liberar as gemas laterais da dormência. Este trabalho foi realizado na área comercial da fazenda CALIMAN AGRÍCOLA S/A, em Linhares-ES, e objetivou estudar o efeito da poda em diferentes alturas do tronco em plantas de mamoeiro ‘Golden’, em lavoura com dois anos e meio de idade, em final de produção. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com seis repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco alturas de poda (inteira sem o ápice, 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0 m) a partir do solo, sendo a parcela experimental constituída por cinco plantas. As características avaliadas foram: número de brotações laterais aos 25 dias e aos 50 dias após a poda; número de brotações laterais maiores que 5 cm aos 50 dias após a poda; e distribuição das brotações na altura do tronco aos 50 dias. A poda do caule a 2,0 m de altura proporcionou os maiores valores para todas as características avaliadas |
