| English abstract | Lee Teng-Hui’s 1999 statement that there is “one State on each side of the strait” established a new starting point that makes difficult the achievement of a rosy future for the island of Taiwan. In March 2004, as elections for renewing their leadership were taking place, the Taiwanese were confronted with security and political problems that were influenced by powerful external forces, which intensified the prevailing uncertainty. It seems difficult to believe that the authorities in Taipei possess the skill and the art for practicing the requisite ambiguity for maintaining the status quo on the island |
| Portuguese abstract | A partir de declaração de Lee Teng-Hui, em 1999, de que existe “um Estado em cada margem do estreito”, foi estabelecida nova cena de partida que dificulta a realização de um futuro formoso para a ilha de Taiwan. Em março de 2004, por ocasião de eleições para renovar sua liderança, os taiwaneses defrontaram-se com problemas de segurança e políticos, influenciados por poderosas forças externas, que contribuem para o clima de incerteza que se vive. Parece difícil crer que autoridades em Taipé sejam capazes do engenho e arte de exercitar a ambigüidade necessária para manter o “status quo” |
