| English abstract | The knowledge of dentistry, especially the stomatology, is crucial for the correct diagnosis of oral cavity diseases, such as those arising from the employment relationship. Thus, the occupational dentist needs to improve and expand their knowledge in stomatology to get more accurate history and diagnosis of the ills that may arise. Objectives: This article highlights the role of Occupational Dentistry (OT) in the diagnosis of work-related diseases, especially in diving. And underscores the importance of understanding disease processes at work originated because early diagnosis can be made by a dentist. Methods: We performed a literature review using PubMed and the Bibliographical Index Medicus to identify articles in English published on topics related to the keyword “dental barotrauma”. Results: Few studies about the topic were found and only seven reported dental barotrauma, and a significant part of the literature is not current. Despite the Norm number 15 of the Ministry of Labour deal with the matter, it does not talk about the performance of occupational dentist for examinations in these workers. Conclusions: It is for the OT examination and monitoring of oral health worker, seeking prevention, early diagnosis, quality of life, increased productivity and therefore profit for the company. | Portuguese abstract | O conhecimento da Odontologia, especialmente da estomatologia, é fundamental para o diagnóstico correto das doenças da cavidade oral, como as decorrentes da relação laboral. Desta forma, o Dentista do Trabalho tem necessidade de aprimorar e ampliar o seu conhecimento em estomatologia para obter uma anamnese mais acurada e um diagnóstico mais preciso dos males que porventura houver. Objetivos: Este artigo destaca a atuação do profissional de Odontologia do Trabalho (OT) no diagnóstico de doenças relacionadas ao trabalho, em especial no mergulho, e ressalta a importância do conhecimento, por parte do profissional de estomatologia, sobre processos patológicos originados durante o exercício da atividade laboral, pois o diagnóstico precoce pode ser elaborado pelo cirurgião-dentista. Métodos: Foi realizada revisão da literatura por meio do Índice Bibliográfico PubMed e do Index Medicus para identificar artigos em inglês publicados com temas relacionados à palavra-chave “barotrauma dental”. Resultados: Poucos estudos sobre o tema foram encontrados e apenas sete relataram o barotrauma dental, sendo parte significativa da literatura não atual. Apesar da Norma Regulamentadora nº 15 do Ministério do Trabalho tratar do assunto, não fala sobre a atuação do profissional de OT para a realização de exames nestes trabalhadores. Conclusões: Cabe à OT o exame e acompanhamento da saúde oral do trabalhador, visando prevenção, diagnóstico precoce, qualidade de vida, aumento da produtividade e, consequentemente, lucro para a empresa. Quanto à OT no mergulho, a função do dentista é primordialmente preventiva, sendo necessárias avaliações médicas e exames clínicos odontológicos regulares nos mergulhadores |
