| English abstract | The tridentine and roman authoritarian catholicism is the main subject of this present article, wich will focus the first decades of the XX century of the Brazilian catholic culture. In another moment, the article will approach the ultramontanism as a hard tendency in explaining the dicotomies among the old and the new, the good and the bad. | Portuguese abstract | Este artigo aborda o confronto entre um catolicismo autoritário, tridentino e romanizador, que penetrou no Brasil na segunda metade do século XIX e se consolidou nas primeiras décadas do século XX, e o catolicismo tradicional vigente, de fortes raízes populares. Em sua obsessão pela unanimidade, o ultramontanismo negou as outras formas de ser católico, estabelecendo as dicotomias entre o velho e o novo, o bom e o mau.
