| English abstract | The 1995 winter over south, southeast and central west Brazil was anomalous because monthly mean temperatures recorded in this period showed large positive deviations and the precipitation was below normal. In this study, atmospheric, oceanic and surface analyses were performed. The main goal is to diagnose the observed atmospheric anomalies over Brazil. Streamfunction anomalies at 200 hPa revealed the presence of a blocking atmospheric situation and a wavetrain configuration in july and august depicting an anticyclonic circulation over the Pacific Ocean and South America. The atmospheric pattern blocked the frontal system track which was displaced from the normal path crossing the interior of the continent to the coast region. Time series of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies in areas 3 (over the South Atlantic Ocean) and 4 (over the South Pacific Ocean) were in opposite phase during the entire period. Area 3 showed a continuous cooling associated with a cyclonic circulation at low levels and area 4 showed a continuous warming associated with a subtropical anticyclonic circulation |
| Portuguese abstract | O inverno de 1995 nas Regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro Oeste do Brasil foi atípico, pois as temperaturas médias mensais registradas neste período apresentaram grandes desvios positivos e a precipitação ficou abaixo da média. Neste estudo foi feita uma análise dos campos atmosféricos, oceânicos e de superfície com o objetivo de se diagnosticar essas anomalias observadas. Nas anomalias de função de corrente em 200 hPa, foram identificados bloqueios na atmosfera que impediram a penetração de sistemas frontais pelo interior do continente. Foi também identificada uma configuração de trem de ondas com circulações anticiclônicas sobre o Pacífico sudeste e sobre a América do Sul. Usando-se séries temporais de anomalias de Temperatura da Superfície do Mar (TSM) observou-se que as áreas 3 (no Oceano Atlântico Sul) e 4 (no Oceano Pacífico Sul) estiveram em oposição de fases. A área 3 apresentou um contínuo resfriamento associado a uma circulação ciclônica em baixos níveis e a área 4 apresentou um aquecimento contínuo associado a uma circulação anticiclônica subtropical |
