| Spanish abstract | El concepto actual de salud no sólo considera el bienestar humano, sino engloba salud animal y salud de los ecosistemas. La continua modificación del ambiente por acción humana ha incrementado la aparición de Enfermedades Infecciosas Emergentes (EIE) o el resurgimiento de otras ya controladas, las Enfermedades Reemergentes (ERE) de origen zoonótico. Esto conlleva a la integración de la medicina veterinaria, la medicina humana y la salud ambiental bajo un solo enfoque denominado Medicina de la Conservación (MC), la cual posibilita el entendimiento integral y multifactorial de la ecología de las EIE como el Síndrome Respiratorio Severo Agudo, la fiebre del Nilo Occidental, la fiebre Hemorrágica del Ébola, enfermedad de Lyme, la rabia; o de las llamadas ERE como la Tripanosomiasis Americana y la Leishmaniasis. Todas estas enfermedades pueden ser abordadas desde el enfoque de la MC dada la conexión entre fauna silvestre y doméstica, el ecosistema y el ser humano, como una herramienta para la comprensión, prevención y manejo sostenible de zooantroponosis |
| English abstract | The current concept of health does not include only the human welfare, but also involves the health of the human, other animals and the ecosystems. The continuous environmental modification by human action has increased the occurrence of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) or those re-emerging, i.e. previously controlled diseases of zoonotic origin (REID). Those facts have encourage the integration of veterinary medicine, human medicine and environmental health under a unique focus understood as Conservation Medicine (CM) which enable the integral and multifactorial understanding the ecology of EID such as West Nile virus, SARS, Ebola virus, Lyme disease, Hantavirus, Rabies virus, or the REID such as American trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis. All these diseases can be viewed from the CM perspective because the connection bridges between wild and domestic fauna, the ecosystem and the human being, for understanding, prevention and sustainable management of zoo-anthropo-zoonoses |
