| English abstract | In women studies, especially those concerned with narratives by women writers, violence takes a prominent position, given that it is one of the elements that distinguish the genres in the symbolic economy (cf. Bourdieu, 1999). This article deals with the different treatment given to violence committed by female characters in two works: the gothic novels by English writer Charlotte Dacre and the recent book by Brazilian novelist Nélida Piñon. Through a comparison between these two texts, this article aims at achieving a better understanding of how women writers have tried, throughout time and in different contexts, to subvert and annul the hegemonic order prevalent in the societies where they worked. This analysis will lead us to a surprising path to non-violence through literature |
| Portuguese abstract | Nos estudos de gênero, especialmente aqueles sobre a narrativa de autoria feminina, a violência ocupa um lugar de destaque, visto ser ela um dos elementos que distinguem os gêneros dentro da economia simbólica (cf. Bourdieu, 1999). Neste trabalho, será abordado o diferente tratamento dado à violência cometida por personagens femininas em duas obras: os romances góticos da escritora inglesa Charlotte Dacre e o recente romance Vozes do Deserto da brasileira Nélida Piñon. Através de uma comparação entre estes dois textos, pretende-se compreender melhor de que forma as mulheres escritoras tentaram, ao longo do tempo e em vários contextos, subverter e anular a ordem hegemônica vigente nas sociedades em que atuavam. Esta análise levará a um surpreendente caminho para a não-violência através da própria literatura |
