| English abstract | The work of Augustine covers a large discursive net on the most different subjects. The question about widowhood and virginity, for example, constitutes one of the most outstanding aspects of the proposals about gender relations during the passage from 4th to 5th Century. Therefore, we would like to investigate how gender configurations are present in the social representations about the feminine in Augustine writings. So, we concentrate our attention on the agostinian letters directed to Proba and Juliana and the guidelines of the Christian experience established for the women by one of the most important Fathers of the Church. Both the historical figures belonged to aristocratic families of the period and had exchanged letters with Agustine, establishing a dialogue with the ways of experiencing religious life at the time |
| Portuguese abstract | A obra de Agostinho abarca uma numerosa rede discursiva sobre diversos temas. A problemática da viuvez e da virgindade, por exemplo, constituiu um dos mais marcantes aspectos de suas proposições sobre as relações de gênero na passagem do século IV para o V. Por isso, gostaríamos de investigar como as configurações de gênero se fazem presentes nas representações sociais do feminino em Agostinho. Para isso, desejamos concentrar nossa atenção sobre as cartas agostinianas dirigidas à Proba e à Juliana e as diretrizes de vivência cristã propostas às mulheres por um dos mais importantes Padres da Igreja. Ambas as figuras históricas pertenciam às famílias aristocráticas do período e mantiveram um diálogo promissor sobre as formas de se significar e experimentar na época a vida religiosa |
