| English abstract | This study evaluates how the structural changes, that occurred in the Northeast Region, between 1997 and 2004, affected the levels of production and employment within the region. To reach this goal, it was used a structural decomposition analysis using matrix of input-product regional in the period mentioned. The results show a considerable change in the structure of employment in the region over this period. There was an increase of the intensity of labour in different activities and a decrease in others, like in the agricultural sector. Without the contribution of final demand, the changes in technical coefficients in conjunction with changes in employment coefficients, a decline in employment in the region could have happened, instead of the increase recorded during the period |
| Portuguese abstract | Este trabalho avalia como as mudanças estruturais, ocorridas na Região Nordeste entre 1997 e 2004, afetaram os níveis de produção e emprego setoriais na região. Para tal, foi utilizada uma análise de decomposição estrutural empregando as matrizes de insumo-produto regionais do período em questão. Os resultados apontam para mudança considerável na estrutura do emprego na região no período analisado, havendo aumento da intensidade do fator trabalho em diversas atividades e queda em outras, como ocorreu com o setor agropecuário. Sem a contribuição da demanda final, as mudanças nos coeficientes técnicos em conjunto com as mudanças nos coeficientes de emprego poderiam provocar uma queda no emprego na região, em vez do aumento registrado no período analisado |
