| English abstract | Recently, there has been a lot of debate on the space distribution of the poor. The more disaggregated the map, more perfect is the view, bigger is the evidence of poverty and better the understanding of how it is formed and how it can be battled based on public policies locally specific. International literature is full of examples of poverty mapping, notably due to the influence of studies carried through by the World Bank, FAO and the UNDP. In Brazil, the subject is still incipient, however, it already can be said that this is one of the current routes that does research on poverty and inequality have been taking. This article calls attention for the quarrel about the topic showing its state-of-theart. It is presented how the current literature deals with the mapping of the poverty, showing its limitations, advantages and its ways of construction. Some methods of analysis often used are also presented, such as the small area estimation method and the main concepts of space econometrics |
| Portuguese abstract | Apresenta a importância dos mapas da pobreza, seus benefícios e vantagens, e as dificuldades de montá-los. Constata que no Brasil, o tema ainda é incipiente, contudo, já se pode dizer que é um dos rumos atuais que pesquisas sobre pobreza e desigualdade têm tomado. Chama a atenção para a discussão a respeito do tema, mostrando seu ‘estado da arte’. Apresenta como a literatura atual trata o mapeamento da pobreza, mostrando suas limitações, vantagens e sua construção. Discute alguns métodos de análise comumente utilizados, como o small area estimation e os principais conceitos da econometria espacial. Conclui que, a partir de uma definição de pobreza abrangente dos aspectos econômicos e sociais, a construção dos mapas de pobreza é fundamental para o entendimento apurado da pobreza e que, sem eles, sua compreensão não está completa |
