| English abstract | Female family headship empowers Brazilian women with a prominent position before the family responsibilities; and this has become a constant within popular communities. This way, this paper aims to analyze the senses that women assign to the position of head of family. This qualitative research, with an ethnographic focus, had as instrument of data collection of biographic interviews and field research diaries. Five women, heads of family, from a community in the city of Santa Maria, RS, participated in this study. The results indicate that the family headship is associated with the work, the administration of the budget, the children and home care. The absence of a companion results in an increase of deeds upon women, but it grants them a status position and recognition from the family, because the female head of family has given up individual projects in favor of the collective. So, women strengthen their autonomy and build a space that allows their constitution as a induvidual, transformer of their reality |
| Portuguese abstract | A chefia familiar feminina confere à mulher brasileira uma posição de destaque frente às responsabilidades familiares e está se tornando constante nas comunidades populares. Dessa forma, este trabalho objetiva analisar os sentidos que as mulheres atribuem à posição de chefe de família. Esta pesquisa qualitativa, de cunho etnográfico, teve como instrumento de coleta de dados entrevistas biográficas e diários de campo. Participaram deste estudo cinco mulheres chefes de família de uma comunidade da cidade de Santa Maria, RS. Os resultados indicam que a chefia familiar é associada ao trabalho, à administração do orçamento, ao cuidado dos filhos e do lar. A ausência de um companheiro resulta em um aumento da exigência para as mulheres, mas lhes concede status e reconhecimento pelo grupo familiar, pois a chefe de família abdica de projetos individuais em prol do coletivo. Assim, a mulher fortalece sua autonomia e constrói um espaço que possibilita sua constituição como sujeito transformador de sua realidade |
