| Spanish abstract | Este artículo analiza el sistema defensivo de la "Frontera del Uruguay" en el período virreinal, problemática poco estudiada hasta el momento. El foco está puesto en la coyuntura de principios de siglo XIX, signada por las reformas de Avilés, la escasez de tropa veterana, la anexión portuguesa de las Misiones Orientales y la desarticulación de milicias guaraníes. Asimismo, se esbozan algunas dificultades y dilemas afrontados por la administración colonial en la reorganización militar de la Intendencia y de la Frontera del Uruguay en la primera década del siglo |
| English abstract | This article analyzes the defensive system of the "Uruguay border" in the viceregal period, which hasn’t been studied in depth yet. The focus is on the early Nineteenth century, when the Aviles’ reforms, the shortage of veteran forces, the Portuguese annexation of Eastern Missions and the dismantling of Guarani militias coincided. Also, it outlines some difficulties and dilemmas faced by the colonial administration regarding the military reorganization of the Intendancy and "Uruguay border" in the first decade of the century |
