| English abstract | Many radical democrats endorse participation and deliberation in a single breath, these two strands of the democratic project grow from different traditions and address distinct failures of competitive representation. Our aim here is to clarify the relationship of these different strands, explore the tensions between them, and sketch some possibilities for reconciliation. We start by showing how participation and deliberation might address three limitations of competitive representation. Then we present some tensions between deliberation and participation, and offer two strategies for blunting these tensions. We conclude by outlining the unsolved difficulties that must be met in order to advance a radical-democratic project |
| Portuguese abstract | Embora muitos democratas radicais apóiem em uníssono a participação e a deliberação, essas duas linhas do projeto democrático partem de tradições diferentes e enfocam diferentes falhas da representação competitiva. Nosso objetivo é clarear a relação entre essas diferentes linhas, explorar as tensões entre elas e esboçar possibilidades de reconciliação. Inicialmente, demonstraremos como se pode lidar com três das limitações da representação competitiva por meio da participação e da deliberação. Em seguida, apresentaremos algumas tensões entre deliberação e participação, às quais serão oferecidas duas estratégias que podem minimizá-las. Concluiremos delineando as dificuldades não resolvidas que devem ser eliminadas tendo em vista um projeto radical-democrático |
