| Spanish abstract | Francisco Tosta García, como historiador, se ufanó de consultar fuentes escritas y orales del tiempo histórico que estudió. Se planteó, como objetivo de su obra, investigar los hechos fundamentales de nuestra historia política nacional, así como esbozar las vidas de los principales protagonistas de los acontecimientos y mostrar las peculiaridades regionales, las costumbres, el habla popular, para hacer más ameno el relato. Consideraba que había que establecer cierta distancia de los hechos estudiados para no afectar intereses ni herir susceptibilidades. En el plano de las ideas políticas, fue liberalfederalista. En la vida pública nacional se adhirió, primero, al guzmancismo; luego, al gomecismo. Defendió la lucha por la igualdad, la república, los derechos del hombre, la educación para superar las costumbres coloniales. En el plano internacional, propuso la confederación latinoamericana |
| English abstract | As a historian, Francisco Tosta García boasted about consulting written and oral sources of the historical time that he studied. As the main objective of his work, he aimed to investigate the fundamental facts of our national political history, as well as the most important protagonists of the events; to show the regional peculiarities, customs, and popular speech, and to make his account more pleasant. He considered necessary to create certain distance from the facts under study, not to either affect interests or hurt susceptibilities. In the field of political ideas, he was liberal-federalist. In his public national life, he embraced, first, the guzmancismo; then, the gomecismo. He defended the fight for equality, the Republic, the rights of men, and education to overcome colonial customs.
