English abstract | According to Weber, a charismatic leader commands devotion from followers who find prophetic and heroic attributes in him. The actions of a charismatic leader are distant from those present in everyday existence, traditions or norms; and are not based on abstract principles or laws. In 2004, a group of Hugo Chávez’s followers were interviewed. The corpus was transcribed verbatim and analyzed based on categories listed in Weber’s work on charismatic authority. These findings show that, from the perspective of the interviewees, Chávez has extraordinary qualities and acts in a mythic and heroic dimension, thus making his succession difficult or unattainable. Chávez’s supporters also believe that he is indifferent about his own, personal economic affairs, caring instead for the well-being of his partisans. Evidence gives rise to the conclusion that Chávez’s followers recognize the charismatic nature of his leadership |
