| English abstract | The magnitude and severity of dental caries in primary teeth continues to be a major problem and should receive special attention. Recognition of the fact that parents play important role in caries prevention for their children this study was to assess the knowledge and perception that mothers have about oral hygiene in babies. A observacional study, with inductive approach, was realized and the sample was composed by a group of 80 mothers whose children were assisted at the Hospital Alcides Carneiro in Campina Grande city. A specific questionnaire was elaborated containing the socialdemographic data and relative subjects to the buccal hygiene in babies. Among the main results, it was observed that only 32.5% of mothers had received information about the baby's oral hygiene, being the pediatrician the main font information. The oral hygiene was accomplished by 73.8% of the mothers and 50.8% began before the eruption of the first deciduous tooth |
| Portuguese abstract | A magnitude e severidade da cárie dentária em dentes decíduos constituem-se ainda em um grave problema de saúde e necessita receber atenção especial. Reconhecendo a importância dos pais na prevenção da cárie dentária, este trabalho objetivou verificar o conhecimento e percepção que um grupo de mães tem sobre a higiene bucal de seus bebês. Foi realizado um estudo observacional, com abordagem indutiva, sendo a amostra foi composta por um grupo de 80 mães cujos filhos eram atendidos no Hospital Alcides Carneiro em Campina Grande-PB. Elaborou-se um questionário específico contendo os dados sócio-demográficos e questões relativas à higiene bucal em bebês. Dentre os principais resultados observou-se que apenas 32,5% das mães tinham recebido informações sobre a higiene bucal do seu filho, sendo o pediatra a principal fonte de informações. A higiene bucal era realizada por 73,8% das mães e 50,8% iniciaram antes da erupção do primeiro dente decíduo |
