| English abstract | This study aimed identify the knowledge and attitudes of the teachers from the 1ª to the 4ª grade of the elementary school at publics and particulars institutions in the city of João Pessoa/PB, related to the oral health. Were participantes of the study the teachers from public and particular schools. The instrument of the study was a interview not estrutured because it was a qualitative study, in order to detect the perceptions and the values of the teachers about oral health. The interviews were recorded and transcripted and in their analysis were identificated the similatiries and the differences between the two groups of teachers. In relation to the similarities, it was observed that the teachers from the public and the particular schools recive the formal instruction about general health and oral health and also pass this knowledge, considering this like a relevant atribution of the educator. His health's concept is wide, social contextualized and dependent of the educational level. Both know the basic prevetion aspects in dentistry. The profiles get different when the size and the quality of the health's problems observed in their students were listed, in the importance of the Public Health Sistem, in the parents' contribution to detect and guide the health's problems from their sons and in the importance gave to the prevention. It was concluded that the similarities in knowlegde and attitudes between the groups are related to the generical cutural aspects and those operacionals related to the profission. | Portuguese abstract | Este trabalho objetivou identificar os conhecimentos e atitudes de professores de 1ª a 4ª séries do ensino fundamental de escolas públicas e particulares na cidade de João Pessoa/PB, em relação à saúde bucal. Foram sujeitos do estudo professores da rede pública e da rede particular. Empregou-se metodologia qualitativa tendo como instrumento a entrevista não estruturada, buscando detectar as percepções e valores dos professores sobre saúde bucal. As entrevistas foram gravadas e transcritas e em sua análise, a partir de categorias determinadas, foram identificadas semelhanças e diferenças entre os dois grupos em estudo. Em relação às semelhanças, observou-se que os professores da rede pública e privada recebem instrução formal sobre saúde geral e saúde bucal e transmitem esses conhecimentos, considerando esta como uma atribuição relevante do educador. Seu conceito de saúde é amplo, contextualizado socialmente e dependente do nível educacional. Ambos conhecem os aspectos básicos de prevenção em odontologia. Os perfis tornam-se diferentes ao listar tamanho e qualidade dos problemas de saúde observados nos seus alunos, na importância atribuída ao Sistema Público de Saúde, na contribuição dos pais na detecção e encaminhamento dos problemas de saúde dos seus filhos e na importância dada à prevenção. Concluiu-se que as semelhanças de conhecimento e atitude entre os grupos encontram-se nos aspectos culturais genéricos e aqueles operacionais relacionados à profissão.
