| English abstract | The present study has followed a qualitative methodology in order to verify maternal feelings after their newborn death considering the loss of a child in the first year of life. During this study, three mothers were interviewed and data of these interviews were submitted to Bardin’s (2002) analysis method. The main findings of this study are: mother’s denial feelings, anger, impotence, guilt, death and hopelessness. Ambivalent feelings were expressed by mothers because they wanted to have another child but also manifested a need to go through this loss, because they believe that nothing happens by chance. The marital relationship and the expectations of mothers on child loss interfere with the quality and the development of feelings of grief of those mothers. Considering that, there is a need for reorganization in the family system. The social support network is an important for helping the mourning mother |
| Portuguese abstract | Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa, buscou verificar os sentimentos gerados nas mães diante da morte de um filho no primeiro ano de vida. Para tanto, foram entrevistadas três mães, cujos dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo de Bardin (2002). Os resultados apontam negação dos sentimentos, sentimentos de raiva, de impotência, de vazio, de culpa, de morte e desesperança. Sentimentos ambivalentes foram manifestados pelas mães, diante do desejo de ter o filho e a manifestação da necessidade de passar por esta perda, pois acreditam que nada acontece por acaso. A relação conjugal e as expectativas das mães em relação ao filho perdido interferem na qualidade dos sentimentos e na elaboração do luto dessas mães, havendo a necessidade de uma reorganização no sistema familiar. As redes sociais de apoio são importantes para a elaboração do luto materno |
