| Spanish abstract | A pesar de los avances en el área médica y de los intentos por llevar los programas de salud a todas las poblaciones del país, las infecciones de la región maxilofacial, en especial las odontogénicas, son una causa frecuente de hospitalización, y en casos extremos de fallecimiento. Pocos de los pacientes que son manejados por un cirujano maxilofacial nunca recibieron tratamiento previo, la gran mayoría fueron multitratados por especialistas y cirujanos dentistas de práctica general que no lograron resolver el problema del paciente. Es importante conocer estas circunstancias e identificarlas tempranamente para establecer los límites de cuando un proceso infeccioso debe, por su gravedad, ser manejado por un cirujano maxilofacial |
| English abstract | In spite of the advances in the medical area and the attempts to lead new health programs to all the populations of the country, the infections of the maxilofacial region, in special the odontogenic, are a frequent cause of hospitalization, and in extreme cases of death. Few of the patients who are handled by a maxilofacial surgeon never received previous treatment, the great majority were treated by specialists and dentists of general practice who did not solve the problem of the patient. It is important to know these circumstances and to identify them early to establish the limits of when an infectious process must, by his gravity, being handled by a maxilofacial surgeon |
