| Spanish abstract | En su origen, el socialismo estaba estrechamente ligado a la democracia. Fue, en sus comienzos, un intento de radicalización de la democracia sobre la base de un proyecto de «democracia social» que pretendía articular libertad política con bienestar económico. El artículo argumenta que esto comenzó a cambiar con el auge del marxismo y la Revolución Rusa, cuando el socialismo pasó a ser visto como algo diferente de –e incluso opuesto a– la democracia. La cara más dramática de esta mutación fueron los socialismos nacionales de tipo fascista y estalinista. Aunque en buena parte de América Latina la democracia social ha ganado terreno, hoy se enfrenta al socialismo del siglo xxi, un tardío intento de regreso a las ideas del socialismo antidemocrático del siglo pasado |
| English abstract | In its origins, socialism was closely related to democracy. It was, at the outset, an attempt to radicalize democracy on the basis of a «social democratic» project which sought to articulate political liberty with economic well-being. The article argues that this began to change with the advance of Marxism and the Russian Revolution, when socialism began to be seen as something different from –and even opposed to– democracy. The most dramatic manifestation of this mutation were the fascist and Stalinist national socialisms. Although in the greater part of Latin America social democracy has gained ground, it now faces a «twenty-first century socialism», a belated attempt to return to the ideas of the anti-democratic socialism of the past century |
