| Spanish abstract | El Centro Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Demografía (CELADE), que desde 1997 es la División de Población de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), celebró en 2007 sus 50 años de vida. El evento culminante de las celebraciones fue un seminario internacional conmemorativo1, que contó con la participación de destacados especialistas de la región —y de otros continentes— en temas demográficos. Se reflexionó, además, sobre la evolución de la población en América Latina y el Caribe y sus implicancias para los procesos de desarrollo económico y social de los países de la región. Destacó en el seminario la presencia de la primera directora del Centro, Dra. Carmen Miró. Se presenta aquí un breve repaso de los principales hitos de la historia institucional del CELADE, sus contribuciones más significativas en el campo demográfico y sus principales ejes temáticos en el contexto latinoamericano y caribeño. Seguidamente, se da cuenta de los temas analizados y debatidos en el seminario internacional conmemorativo de sus 50 años de labor. Se intenta, de alguna manera, hacer un breve recorrido por el legado del CELADE para la región y los desafíos analíticos y metodológicos que la realidad demográfica de América Latina y el Caribe plantea a la institución al cabo de sus primeros 50 años de historia. | English abstract | The Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre (CELADE), since 1997 the Population Division of the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC), celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2007. Activities culminated in an international seminar1 to mark the anniversary, with the participation of distinguished regional and international specialists in demographic issues. The discussions covered population trends in Latin America and the Caribbean and their implications for the economic and social development of the region. Among the participants was Dr Carmen Miró, the first director of CELADE. This document offers a brief appraisal of the milestones throughout the history of CELADE, its most important contributions to demographic studies, and the main thematic areas developed by the centre in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. This is followed by a review of the issues analysed and discussed at the international seminar. A brief overview is also included of the impact of CELADE on the region, along with the analytical and methodological challenges presented by Latin American and Caribbean demographics to the institution at the end of its first fifty years.
