| Spanish abstract | En el presente ensayo se examinan diversos estudios sobre la participación laboral femenina en la industria maquiladora mexicana. Luego se establecen las ausencias en dichos análisis y finalmente, se intenta presentar una revisión teóricamente más adecuada para el estudio del trabajo femenino, que tiene que ver con la consideración de la división y segregación de los puestos de trabajo, la definición de los espacios laborales como femeninos y masculinos y la relación entre mujeres y sindicatos. Lo anterior, con el objetivo de explicar por qué ni la transición de una economía de servicios a otra, con una presencia importante de la industria maquiladora, ni la mayor presencia de las mujeres en el mercado de trabajo, ha contribuido a matizar la diferenciación por género en la fuerza laboral en Ciudad Juárez |
| English abstract | The analysis over the subject of gender and work requires a reconsideration of the traditional focuses and concepts by which the labor context has been studied. For example, one of the main questions traditionally put forth on the table of gender studies is why historically from the economic perspective an equal investment of human energy is rewarded unequally. An answer to this question is essential, because as in the case of Ciudad Juárez, neither the growing presence of women in the labor market, nor the transition from a service economy to an increasingly manufacturing one has contributed to a closing of the economic gender gap. The first part of this essay examines how the role of women in the maquiladora industry has been analyzed from the 1970’s to the present and many of the elements that are lacking in these studies. The second half of the essay consists of examples of the various theories regarding women’s labor in relation with the segregation in work, labor spaces, and labor unions with the objective of bringing clarity to the study of women’s labor in the maquiladora industry |
