| Spanish abstract | Se hace una breve presentación de la fundación de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UNAM) en 1974, su organización académica departamental, la organización de la investigación por áreas y la creación de la figura de profesor-investigador. Además, se describen las actividades de investigación, docencia y difusión de la cultura del grupo de investigación adscrito al Área de Química de Materiales del Departamento de Ciencias Básicas, División de CBI de la UAM-A, el cual realiza sus actividades de investigación en catálisis desde hace varios años y en la nanociencia y la nanotecnología en el último lustro. Asimismo, se mencionan los proyectos que se llevan a cabo en el área, la infraestructura y sus laboratorios, las colaboraciones y el desempeño académico de los investigadores en el ámbito de la docencia y la formación de recursos humanos en las licenciaturas de ingeniería química e ingeniería ambiental; así como en el Posgrado de Ciencias e Ingeniería de Materiales, maestría y doctorado (perteneciente al Programa Nacional de Posgrados de Calidad del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología PNPC-CONACyT). | English abstract | This article makes a brief presentation of the founding of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UNAM), its departmental academic organization, the organization of research by areas and the creation of the professor-researcher figure. In addition, the activities of research, teaching and the culture diffusion of the research group attached to the Materials Chemistry Area of the Department of Basic Sciences, CBI Division of UAM-A, are described. This group has carried out its research activities in catalysis for several years and in nanoscience and technology in the last five years. Also mentioned are the projects that are carried out in the area, the infrastructure and its laboratories, the collaborations and the academic performance of the researchers in the field of teaching and the human resources training in the bachelors of chemical and environmental engineering; as well as in the Postgraduate of Sciences and Engineering of Materials, Masters and Doctors degree (belonging to the National Postgraduate Program of Quality of the National Council of Science and Technology.
