| Spanish abstract | La necesidad y eficacia de la intervención seglar en el marco del apostolado evangélico fue reconocida por Santo Domingo a través de la fundación de la Tercera Orden. Con el objetivo de transitar los caminos hacia la propia santificación y la salvación de las almas, fue un eficaz espacio para alcanzar la perfección cristiana por otro camino que el exclusivamente monástico o clerical. En este sentido, la rama femenina de la Hermandad, creada a instancias del Patriarca en su valorización hacia las más débiles, permitió hacer visible el rol de la mujer en las tareas sociales, asistenciales y educativas. Sin descuidar el ámbito familiar y las necesidades de los colectivos marginales, las terciarias dominicas nutrieron su religiosidad con la asistencia sacramental, las devociones particulares, los ejercicios penitentes y el rechazo por la vida profana. Desde esta perspectiva, y sin abandonar su condición laical, construyeron un espacio de disciplina y fortalecimiento espiritual que les permitió, a través de los años, legitimar su protagonismo social y religioso consagrado a las tareas benefactoras y piadosas del complejo mundo colonial del siglo XVIII |
| English abstract | The need and effectiveness of the secular intervention in the context of the evangelical apostolate was recognized by Santo Domingo by founding the Third Order. With the aim of following the paths to sanctification and to the salvation of souls, it was an effective space to achieve Christian perfection by following a path other than the exclusively monastic or clerical. In this sense the feminine branch of the Brotherhood, created at the Patriarch’s request in his valorization towards the weakest, helped to make visible the role of women in the social welfare, assistance and educational tasks. Without neglecting the family environment and the needs of marginal groups, they nourished their religiosity with sacramental assistance, private devotions, penitent exercises and rejection of profane life. From this perspective, and without leaving aside their lay condition, they built a space of discipline and spiritual strengthening that allowed them, over the years, to legitimize their social and religious protagonism devoted to the benefactor and pious tasks of the complex colonial world of the eighteenth century |
