| Spanish abstract | En el presente trabajo se estudia la importancia que tuvo el ritual catedralicio en México durante los últimos cuarenta años del siglo XVI. En dicho periodo, el cabildo eclesiástico y los arzobispos, pusieron un fuerte empeño por hacer de la catedral de México la más importante iglesia de la provincia eclesiástica mexicana. En esas tareas, las ceremonias jugaron un importante papel político y religioso, en tanto que a través de ellas el cabildo y la catedral demostrar su preeminencia ante las demás corporaciones de la ciudad |
| English abstract | This article examines the importance of Cathedral ritual in Mexico during the last 40 years of the 16th century, a period in which the ecclesiastical Chapter and archbishops strove to make the Mexico City Cathedral the most important church in the ecclesiastical province of Mexico. Among many other initiatives, ceremonies played a significant role -both politically and in religious terms- for it was through them that the Chapter and Cathedral demonstrated their preeminence over other corporations in the city |
