| Spanish abstract | Pensamos erradamente que el costumbrismo es una corriente literaria vetusta que se contrapone a las narrativas surgidas de nuevas técnicas de narrar creadas por la modernidad. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo incomodar dicha percepción. Apartándose de la supuesta objetividad realista del costumbrismo, el trabajo afirma la influencia del Ariel de Rodó en el pensamiento de Carlos Medinaceli, el principal escritor costumbrista boliviano, cuya novela La Chaskañawi ayuda a observar algo no detectado hasta hoy: las aproximaciones históricas y sociológicas de esta corriente literaria se quedan cortas cuando se trata de explicar la presencia soterrada y sorpresiva de formas figurativas ocultas que cuestionan la realidad. El método que permite rescatar esta imaginería (motivos literarios, mitos y silencios) no corresponde al de las ciencias nomotéticas que se fundan en leyes causales y explicativas, sino a procedimientos arqueológicos que escarban en el pasado las mutantes formas imaginarias que conflictúan el proceso social. |
| English abstract | We err in thinking of “costumbrismo” as an old literary current counterposed to the new techniques created by modern narratives. The objective of this essay is to debunk such a perception. By countering the supposed objectivity of “costumbrismo”, this article affirms the influence of the Uruguayan José Enrique Rodo’s Ariel in the Bolivian Carlos Medinaceli’s thought. La Chaskañawi, Medinaceli’s novel of manners, helps pinpoint something not addressed up until today: historical and sociological approaches to “costumbrismo” do not allow to detect the buried presence of figurative forms that question the apparent “objectivity” of this literary current. The method that rescues this surprising imagery (ancestral motifs, myths and silences) is not that of the nomothetic sciences, rooted in general laws as opposed to the study of an individual case. We think instead of an “archaeology of knowledge” that scratches in the past the mutant imaginative forms embedded in the present. |
